Story: Sarah Naa Merley Mensah and Emmanuel Ashong,
Accra
An appeal has been made
to Methodists to extend support to less privileged Societies of the Church across
the country.
The appeal was made by
the Methodist Bishop of Accra, the Rt Rev Emmanuel Borlabi Bortey in an address
to congregants at the Rev Joseph Thomas Clegg Memorial Methodist Chapel,
Kaneshie on Sunday, November 28, 2021. The day had been set aside by the Church
to create awareness on and raise funds for the Methodist Development Fund (MDF).
Bishop Borlabi Bortey disclosed
that the Fund is a “Connexional collaboration to help our Church grow”. He bemoaned
the deplorable state of some Methodist chapels and noted, “MDF is to take away our
reproach”. Rt Rev Borlabi Bortey urged members to look beyond their personal comfort
and extend assistance to those in need.
Set-up over a decade ago,
the Methodist Development Fund provides support for development projects in less
privileged Societies. The Fund has over the years assisted in the construction and
rehabilitation of Methodist schools, chapels, manses and other related
facilities.
In a message read on his behalf
by Sis Agatha Ennin Osei, the Lay Chairman of the Accra Diocese, the Presiding Bishop
of The Methodist Church Ghana, the Most Rev Dr Paul Kwabena Boafo pointed out that
the prime goal of MDF is to equip Methodists with befitting places of worship
throughout the connexion. “It is expected of every member to faithfully support
this worthy cause every year with a minimum amount of GHS 1.00”, the message added.
Most Rev Dr Boafo disclosed that his visits to various Societies and Dioceses have
helped him to better appreciate the benefits of MDF.
The Fund projects that an
amount of GHS 4.5 million will be needed to complete unfinished projects and
begin new ones in 2022.
The Accra Diocesan MDF Special
Fund Raising Service hosted by the Kaneshie Circuit at the Rev Joseph Thomas Clegg
Memorial Methodist Chapel, Kaneshie yielded over GHS 14,000.00. The 14th
edition of the Special Fund Raising Service will be hosted by the Dansoman South
Circuit in 2022.
